Long Island Classic

Presented by:  Gym-Nest Gymnastics and Cheer

    Awards:

The Long Island Classic prides itself on giving out a tremendous amount of awards.  It has been our philosophy that each gymnast prepares, practices and endures a great deal get where they are.  The fact that some athletes may "score" better than others on a particular day shouldn't deter gymnasts from feeling pride, success and a sense of accomplishment.

The following is a short explanation and list of awards that gymnasts can receive at the LI Classic:

  • All Around Awards:    The combined score of Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise.  AA Awards are given to 100% of these athletes who compete all four events.  Each athlete is a champion for what they do, and thus, deserves to be recognized on the awards podium!  Given after each session.

  • Individual Event Awards:    The score in rank order on each event.  Awards are given to more than fifty percent of each and every age group.  Given after each session.

  • "WOW" Awards:    This is the LI Classic's own award.  Given on EACH EVENT in EVERY SESSION the judges use their discretion to award athletes.   The judges typically base their selection on something that impressed them, caught their eye or made an athlete stand out.  In the past, "WOW" awards have been given for a variety of things.  Not just a great routine (this is what AA and Event awards are for), but for the dynamics of a routine or skill, the smile or completion of a skill/routine after a fall or bobble, A unique move, pose, skill, or expression, etc.  These tend to be the most regarded awards and athlete can receive.  Given after each session.

  • Team Awards:    These are the combined scores of the highest scoring athletes on each team (4 scores for Levels 4-6; 3 scores for Levels 7-10, 9 & 10's combine for team award).  Given after each session.

  • [New!]"SUPER" Team:[New!]These are the combined scores of the highest scoring athletes on each team, regardless of level or age.   Given after last session of the weekend.

    Age Groups:

The LI Classic has enjoyed great success in its age group determination.  In USA Gymnastics, age groups are determined by either the State of National offices.  What happens at this "global level" is certain age groups become saturated with athletes thus making the awards stand a difficult feat.

What we do is try and "level the playing field."  By splitting each session (which are small to begin with) into evenly distributed age groups, more athletes have a chance to be recognized.

Each session will be split evenly into two age groups by birth-date.  With this system, athletes in the same USA G age group may NOT be in the same LI C age grouping.   It is also possible that athletes with birthdays a day apart can be in different age groups.  The LI C age groups are categorized as Junior and Senior or Older and Younger Divisions.
